What Causes Low Energy Levels While On Dilaudid?

I m taking the narcotic Diludid prescribed after total knee replacement, have taken 4 daily,2mg for pain & prior to PT. Lately my energy has lessened, cry easily over many small things. Usually a positive, happy, in good health. Wondering if these symptoms could stem from the drug?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

- Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is in the opiate/narcotic family and yes, it can cause both fatigue and sedation, as well as altered mood.

Having had recent surgery could also make a person more emotionally fragile, given the physical stress, pain, and medications used in anesthesia.

You may start to feel better soon, especially once you wean off the dilaudid.

However, if you don't and you continue to feel this way or it worsens, then does contact your doctor about this. But likely you will start to feel better rather than worse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh, General & Family Physician
