What Causes Low Blood Count At The Age Of 94?

My mother-in-law age 94 has had a problem with low blood count.
She was in the hospital for 4 days a week ago. August 22 thru Aug 25. She had one bag of blood and a prescription for iron was given to her. She takes the iron pill once a day in the early morning. Today she told me that her colostomy did not work for 4 days and when it did work the content was black. Is this from the iron or is this possibly blood in the bowel?

Thanks for contacting HCM

I am sorry to hear about your mother in law and her recent anemia or low blood count. She recently noted black color stool after taking iron supplements. This is a common occurrence after ingesting iron supplements. I would continue to monitor her stools and see if they change any further or if she becomes weak again. If she does become weak she may need to be seen by her doctor again to determine a source of bleeding.

Hope this helps answer your query. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us again.
