What Causes Loss Of Pigmentation?

I got a cortison shot on March 25, 2011, and about 3 weeks later I loss pigmention on my wrist which appeared as a small light patch about the size of a penny. I was told it will go away. It is now on June 29, 2011 and the spot has spread. It is larger and now about the size of a quarter. The discoloration seems to have speard to to a nearby vein and is now streaking down the center of my forearm. Is this normal? Will this loss of pigmentation continue to spread?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This depigmentation secondary to a steroid shot is due to either too superficial injection of steroid or from injecting high concentrations of the steroid. Depigmentation usually resolves by itself gradually over time, however, you may use a tacrolimus ointment, twice daily on the affected area to hasten the resolution process. Tacrolimus ointment is a prescription product.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
