Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
This is going to sound stupid but the last few months I've noticed I started to when I talk I curl my tongue and bite it and it gives me a lisp. This was never a problem I've had before and even people around me noticed it. I started escotalopram, hydroxyzine around the same time but I don't know if it's the medication or if it's like a muscle problem or like a speech problem.
Thanks for contacting with your health concern and after reviewing your case history I am of the following options:
1. As the drug Escitalopram apart from social anxiety, depression is given in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder[OCD], so although there is no documented side effect as lisping of the drug it could be that your OCD or social anxiety might have been aggravated [either due to mental or emotional aspect].
2. Hydroxyzine is an anxiety medication and not in the group of SSRI [selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor] so chances of serotonin syndrome are nil, but because both escitalopram and hydroxyzine causes taste disturbance and dry mouth respectively thus could be the reason of constant lip smacking.
3. Consider visiting a Psychiatrist for any drug side effect [if any] and get an opinion of a Speech Therapist/Pathologist for articulation sessions.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Munish Sood
