What Causes Left Sided Pain Below Ribs Upon Sitting Up Or Sneezing?

Hi i have a pain in my left side, just below my ribs. I only get this pain when i sit up, bend or stretch this area. The pain is made worse by sneezing for example. i have to get up slowly and pricisely to avoid too much pain. i have had it for approx 1month. i can t feel anything and there is no pain to touch or even when i push the area. I have had some previous health issues, spent alot of time on painkillers, and am on anti-depressants. i have tried eliminating wheat and milk from diet over the last month with no effect. i have occasional constipation but nothing that lasts more than 48hours or so. Could it be an ulcer or i m wondering about a hernia? it does feel like a lump/bruised area that is being squashed or strained??

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your history is classical of a condition called as costochondritis. I would advise you to get an MRI of the painful area, telling the Radiologist to be specifically see for the painful- tender area. This will confirm the diagnosis. Although the exact cause of this condition is not known, the most probable cause can be flu or some systemic infection like enteritis, exertion, stress and anxiety.

I would suggest the following treatment:
- Rest to the area by means of strapping with the adhesive tapes during the deep expiration phase. This will limit the movement, reduce the pain and give rest for healing to occur.
- Anti-inflammatory medicines in full dose as per the weight
- Steroids if required for its strong anti-inflammatory role
- Diuretics to reduced the edema
- Control of stress and anxiety helps a lot
- Local rubrafacient liniments if the area is not covered by strapping
- Confirmation of the diagnosis by local doctor on palpation and clinical evaluation and to get prescription based medicines after discussing the above points. This sort of a treatment helps all my patients. and should help you too.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
