What Causes Labored Breathing While Performing Physical Activity?

When I run or swim I quickly become out of breath and my breathing becomes ragged. Also, I am in good shape and young, but walking up a hill or the stairs at a normal pace can sometimes make me breathing heavier. I breathe very heavy when I sleep, apparently as well. It s kind of annoying when I m just walking up a normal hill and I m huffing and puffing. Am I sick? This has been going on for a while.

Thanks for your question on HCM. Some degree of breathlessness is accepted as a normal physiology.
But if breathlessness is more than yoinvestigate for heart, lung causes and also for anaemia.
So get done
1. Ecg and 2D Echo to rule out heart disease.
2. Chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary FunctionTest) to rule out lung causes.
3. CBC for Hb estimation to rule out anemia.
If all of the above are normal than no need to worry.
