What Causes Knee Pain After Getting A Shingles Vaccine?

I had the shingle shot last Oct. (2016). Last Saturday I woke with terrible pain near my knee. I m 66 in good health but my knees do bother me. I assumed that was the problem. By Tuesday I was in so much pain I called the doctor. As I was getting ready, I noticed 3 dots that I thought were bug bites and I realized I d been scratching that area. I pointed them out to the PA and asked if they could cause the pain. They didn t show the white centers at that time. The PA ordered blood work, put me on a steroid and Tramadol. Told me to come back Friday. By then the white centers were apparent and 4 more bumps had formed on my thigh. The PA explained that I have shingles even though I did have the shot. The pain is pretty uncomfortable. She put me on Valacyclovir. I ask if I should still take the steroid, she said no. I ask about the Tramadol. She said to continue taking it for the pain. I don t seem to be getting much relief from the pain. Is Tramadol the best option for pain relief from shingles? Any suggestions.

Hello,

It isn't a bad choice, but generally, nerve pills are given for shingles. Lidocaine patch, or amitryptiline (which has lidocaine-like effects) or Neurontin usually give and each has about a 90% effectiveness in shingles. I cannot say in your particular case, but generally, these work in shingles.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
