What Causes Itchy Rashes On Arms And Lower Extremities After Taking Contraceptive Pills?

Good day, 2 days ago, my boyfriend and I had an unprotected sex. We were told by an OB friend that i should take contraceptive pills (4 pills within 12 hrs and then 4 pills again thereafter). I did as i was told. After taking the first dose, i felt dizzy and nauseous and It continued until the next day. Now, i noticed that i begin to develop rashes on my arms, neck and lower extremities and it is itchy. My legs also feel a little numb and it feels like there is lack of circulation in them. What could this be? Is this something serious? And also, i have fever, headache and muscle pain the day before the intercourse. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen. Does this play affect anything that im feeling right now? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms could be allergic reaction to the drug. Stop using the contraceptive pill in order to identify the cause of rash. After stopping the drug, the rash should subside in a few days. I would suggest you to take antihistamines or mild steroids to reduce the rashes. This will also prevent anaphylaxis which is a fatal form of allergic reaction that can occur rarely.

Facial or lip swelling, difficulty in swallowing or breathing are some of the symptoms to watch and get treated immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
