What Causes Itching In The Ankles And Feet While On Atorvastatin?

I am currently on 20 mg of Atorvastatin. I have been getting severe itchy ankles and feet. I use moisturizing cream just about daily and do not have dry skin. Could it be a reaction to the Atorvastatin. Thank you, I am a 71 yr old male. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I can understand your concern regarding the Atorvastatin. Itching may be due allergic reaction to Atorvastatin.

The most common side effects of cholesterol lowering medication Atorvastatin includes muscle aches, fatigue, tenderness or weakness, stomach upset, and liver dysfunction. Although less common however, flushing of the skin and itching can also occur in some patients.

I advise you to consult your treating doctor to prescribe an alternate effective but a safer cholesterol lowering medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
