What Causes Itching In Hands And Feet Post Intake Of Nitrofurantoin Mono?
I started taking nitrofurnatonin mono mcr 100 mg a couple of hours ago and my hands and feet are starting to itch me. No visible rash, no other side effects. I took a 5 day course of it 3 weeks ago for a uti, it came back and now I m starting a 7 day course. I don t think it s an allergic reaction but just wanted to check
Hi & Welcome to HCM. The symptoms described in your query following the use of the 'urinary antiseptic' Nitrofurantoin seems to be due to inflamed peripheral nerves of the hands and feet ('peripheral neuropathy') resulting in "glove and stoking pattern" of sensory symptoms such as numbness or itching. It is caused by the neurotoxicity not the allergic reaction. You are advised not to take Nitrofurantoin again for the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infection. Consult your treating doctor for use of an alternate but a safer medication like Nalidixic acid or Ciprofloxcin. If your itching sensations do not subside you may need certain drugs like Pregablin or Gabapentin for the relief. Hope this helps you. A feed back is appreciated.
