Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Itching, Burning And Crawling Sensation On The Scalp?
I have been experiencing itching, burning, crawling sensations in skin. Mostly in my scalp but lately it has been spreading to my arms and the sides of my face and on the backs of my hands. The part on my scalp has been going on for many months but the spreading is recent. There are no signs of a rash. My email is YYYY@YYYY .
Itching & burning sensation in the scalp is due to infections (fungal, viral, bacterial). This occurs when the hair follicles become inflamed & swollen. Folliculitis can be treated with a course of oral anti fungal's. Antifungal creams can be applied locally after cleaning the scalp.
Scalp hygiene should be taken care of by washing the hair with medicated shampoo (Selsun).
In the arms, you can apply hydrocortisone cream to relieve. You are suggested to visit a Psychiatrist for the crawling sensation you are feeling in your scalp.
You will be examined & tested to detect any mental disorder related to tactile hallucination (Formication). Your treatment will depend upon the pathology detected.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
