What Causes Itching And Bruising On Skin?

Hi Doc! Over the past year I have noticed that my skin has become very very itchy to the point that I am beginning to bruise. I also keep losing weight and cannot seem to gain weight. Autoimmune disease runs crAzy in my family my mother and sister have lupus and my grandmother has RA. I have seen a rheumatologist for many joint pain symptoms but my bloodwork always comes back normal. The itching is driving me nuts and the bruises are worrying me. Any suggestions ??

Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in!

Having an itchy skin when blood tests for autoimmune diseases are normal, might be due to possible:
- liver problems (liver function test: bilirubin and transaminases is advised to rule them out)
- allergy reaction to environmental/food allergens (allergy testing advised)
- intestinal parasitic infections (examination of stool for ova/parasites is advised to rule out)
- skin fungal infection (skin scrapping biopsy or microscopical examination with KOH 10% to rule them out).

Hope it was of help!
