What Causes Itching All Over The Body?

My husband and I both have skin itching, had it for several months. He has been to couple of drs and health dept nurse and no one seems to know what it is. Treat/medicate with rx that puts him to sleep. We have a new filter on our well, a hi-tech filter, and suspect that it has messed up something in our really good, safe well water. We have used all topical ointments, soaked in Aveeno, used all sorts of skin itch OTC sprays. He had it first for several weeks before I started itching. Particularly in skin folds, under breasts, around armpits (not in armpits) and has gone down the body trunk having started around the neck and upper chest. Have run clothes washer through extra rinse cycles for several weeks also. Any ideas ? We are both seniors and understand dry, cold weather drying skin but this is much more than that. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I agree that it seems to be more than that, the dry weather should not have such a severe effect. The most common reasons for generalized itching are-

(1) Allergies- an allergy test by your doctor would determine if this is the case for you.
(2) Liver or kidney disease- can be identified by blood tests
(3) Infection such as scabies- this causes itching that is worse at night
(4) Thyroid disease- blood tests can be done for thyroid disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
