What Causes Irregular Heart Beat And Chest Discomfort?

Hi, My son is 13 yrs old active swimmer and has come to me about his heart beat. I have listened to it and it seems to be hard and irregular. I checked his blood pressure and it was 127 over 89 with a 66 heart rate. He has also told me that when he takes a deep breath he has a little discomfort, some pressure. Any idea as to what we should do. Thanks mike

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

An irregular heart beat could be related to physical straining or emotional stress. Anyway, I would recommend consulting with his attending physician and performing some tests in order to investigate for other possible causes that may trigger this clinical scenario:
- A resting ECG
- Complete blood count for anemia
- Thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction
- Blood electrolytes for possible imbalance.

Hope you will find this answer helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
