What Causes Irregular And Heavy Menstruation?

I am almost 45 y/o female. My period has become more sporadic. for example, 2 months no period, now 2 months in a row with bleeding lasting more than 2 weeks. Bleeding can be excessive at times of the day and then nothing the rest of the day. No painful cramping. Should I be concerned?

Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
It appears that you are having irregular menstruation as a result of hormonal imbalance due to your age approaching closer towards menopause. Also it is essential to rule out other pathology which could cause such symptoms like fibroid, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometriosis.
Kindly get the following investigations done.
1. Blood levels of FSH, LH and Prolactin.
2. Ultrasound scan of the abdomen.
Kindly consult Gynaecologist with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
