What Causes Intermittent Vaginal Bleeding While Using Intrauterine Device?

Hi,I am 22 years old, been in the same relationship for 5 years, and have used a copper intrauterine device for about three years. Last month I had small bleeds for about two weeks, then a few days with nothing, and then the bleed came back again, almost like a normal menstruation. I bled for almost a month in a row, and had a lot of stomach pain (similar to those I get every month, only stronger). As I stopped bleeding about 2 weeks ago I didn´t get it checked. However 2 days ago I noticed that my breasts are leaking milk when I squeeze them. Just a few drops each, but still. It´s the same with both breasts, and I am still leaking when I squeeze them. Do you have any idea what this could be, and if there could be any correlation between my two happenings ? Also I took a pregnancy test about three weeks ago (when I was bleeding), which turned out negative. Thanks!

Hi,

Intermittent vaginal bleeding while using an intrauterine device (IUD) can be caused by several factors, including hormonal changes, infection, or complications from the IUD. In some cases, the IUD may become dislodged or shift position, causing bleeding or pain.

The presence of breast milk or nipple discharge, known as galactorrhea, can also be caused by hormonal changes. This can occur due to an imbalance in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, or due to the presence of a benign tumor on the pituitary gland.

It is important to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation if you are experiencing any abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, as well as breast discharge. They can perform a physical exam and order any necessary tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

If you are using an IUD, your healthcare provider can also check to ensure that it is still in the correct position and functioning properly. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, treatment options may include medication, hormonal therapy, or removal of the IUD.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Bleeding between periods is common finding when you have intrauterine device. It doesn't have anything to do with milk secretion from breasts. Milk secretion from breasts is seen in the following conditions:
1) Stress
2) Pituitary tumors
3) Thoracotomy scars
4) Various medication
5) Chronic renal failure
6) Hypothyroidism

You need to see a physician or a gynecologist for further evaluation with clinical examination and few investigations that may be necessary. Your intrauterine device may have slipped or not in proper place resulting in bleeding frequently. So a gynecologist can examine for the position of intrauterine device.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
