What Causes Intermittent Sharp Chest Pain?

Hi I am a 46 year old female. For the past 2-3 weeks I have had intermittent chest pain, sometimes really sharp which stopping me doing any activity or work I am doing. Other times it is a dull, achy pain that hangs around for a bit and then comes and goes. In addition over the last week or so I have noticed my jawline and chin area I get pain and other times numbness and tingling. Do you feel this is anything to be concerned about or just part of the getting older aches and pains? On a side note I am mildly active and try to walk as much as possible and I am within five pounds of the recommended weight for my height/age. Thanks so much!!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

These are typical symptoms of ischemic heart disease and it requires evaluation.

This may indicate specific heart ischemic issues such as angina pectoris or heart arrhythmias and this should be definitely evaluated by a cardiologist and you need to do at least ECG, heart ultrasound and ergometry.

Also, you should check your blood pressure and regulated body mass, avoid smoking.

Other risk factors should be established and prevented but at this point, serious issues must be ruled out and the need for invasive angiography discussed with the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
