What Causes Inflammation Of The Hair Follicles?

Hi,
My son was diagnosed with having folliculitius at around six months. He is now three and has had "dots" every now and then - usually only one. I never do anything with them as my doctor told me that they would go away on their own. About four months ago, I noticed one on my son's shoulder. It is still there. This morning, I squeezed it because he said it was itchy and I thought I might relieve some of the discomfort by getting rid of the fluid. It bled. It doesn't look like it's going to go away on it's own though. I know I have to go see a doctor, but I just wanted to make sure - in the meantime - that I haven't done anything too dangerous. I know it can risk spreading the folliculitius, but aside from that...
Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Folliculitis is a very common skin disorder.

It may be caused by bacteria, also by yeast or another type of fungus.
You may get folliculitis if you have damaged hair follicles. However, frequently folliculitis is sterile and is induced by irritating chemical substances or drugs such as steroid.

Folliculitis sometimes clears by itself. It usually improves after the teen years and young adulthood.

Folliculitis caused by an infectious agents may be transmitted through person-to-person skin contact or hot tubs or razors.

Mild cases of bacterial folliculitis can be treated with an over-the-counter antibacterial wash like benzoyl peroxide (Proactiv).

Hope this helps,

Kind regards
Dr.Mersi
