What Causes Horrible Chest Pain With Radiating Pain In Neck, Jaw And Ears?

Hello. I thought I might have an inflamed esophagus, but when I have an attack, I don t have trouble swallowing. I get horrible pain in my chest that wakes me out of a sleep, and the pain radiates up to my neck, jaw and ears. The episode only happens when I m sleeping, lasts for about 5 min. It helps if I drink water thru a straw.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Chest pain with radiating pain in the neck, jaw & ears is commonly a sign of cardiovascular disease. Such symptoms are often confused with acid reflux/gastritis.

You are suggested to have a physical examination done by a cardiologist. Get CBC, Urinalysis, X-ray, Ecg, Echocardiography, Lipid profile, stress tests, etc to rule out any developing CAD.

In the meantime, you can take antacids & PPI's to get relieved from gastritis & acid reflux.

Avoid stress, anxiety & addictions if any. Take home made food. Stay away from trans fat, high protein(red meat), etc.

Maintain low BMI & do regular exercises. Your treatment will depend upon the severity of the pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
