Have a hoarse voice with a very mild ear ache on the left side in the throat.. I have been on thyroxine for many years. I do not smoke and have the occasional drink. I have heartburn now and again. My doctor put me on reflux tablets but to no avail. I have another appointment with my doctor in three days. I would greatly appreciate you comments. Anne
Hi. It is common for throat pain to radiate to the ear due to a similar nerve supply. The throat pain can be due to an early viral infection or due to a condition called as laryngopharyngeal reflux disease(LPRD)
Since you have an occasional heart burn it is possible that small bits of acid may reflux into the throat and irritate the throat wall and the voice box leading to hoarseness and throat pain.
LPRD is not easy to treat and anti-reflux medications only play a supportive role that too if taken for 6-8 weeks. The mainstay of treatment is lifestyle modifications which involves avoiding spicy diet, tea/coffee/smoking/alcohol consumption, maintaining uniform meal and sleep time every day, keeping the head end elevated during sleep and by avoiding to lie down immediately after meals (atleast 2 hours).
Maintaining absolute voice rest for 24-48 hours will help speed the recovery of your hoarsenes.
LPRD can start at any time and it is not necessary for you to have it for a while in the past to have symptoms now. The body compensates as much as it can and these things can start to develop at any time.
Do proceed for your appointment and discuss these points. I will be happy to help you with any other questions.
