What Causes Hives On Tongue And Puffy Face?

Hi, I just had my T4 FREE test done and it was .59 and my TSH was 2.30. I have been taking Claritin for 4 months now because I started getting hives on my tongue and one time in my throat. Now I have gotten them on my lips too. I read that taking an antihistamine can lower your thyroid function. Is that true because my hair has been falling out since I started taking the Claritin. I am not allergic to anything that I know of. I had ITP when I was 7 and I am now almost 60. Thanks for your advise. (I was told to see an endocrinologist but so far one is not available. I went off the Claritin two days ago. I do have an epi-pen just in case my tongue and throat get hives at the same time. I have lots of energy, no cold hands or feet, but my face does feel puffy now. I also had a cyst removed on my vocal cord twice. Once in 2010 and second time June of 2012.)

Hello,

While your T4 is low your TSH is in a healthy range making me wonder if you aren’t iodine deficient. Granted Claritin can cause low thyroid but your TSH is normal indicating the need for a full thyroid profile including auto antibodies and T3 levels.

Is Claritin the only allergy med that works? Have you tried Benadryl? Have you seen an allergist for testing and treatment for any identified allergies?

My recommendation is to see an allergist and get skin prick tests done, a blood test and food challenge test done, a 3 tier approach.

Then the allergist can suggest appropriate treatment taking your thyroid into consideration.

You don’t need an endocrinologist to run additional labs and cortisol test but you may need Endocrinology to interpret them. My advice is to discontinue Claritin try Benedryl and make an appointment with an allergist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
