What Causes Hives On Body And Scalp While On Levothyroxine For Thyroid?

I have had hives for 10 months and recently was diagnosed with CIU. The rash is all over my body as well as on my scalp. I ve noticed my hair is not as manageable as it was this past summer and, I seem to be losing quite a bit of hair. I have two areas about 1-1/4 diameter where it s almost bald (on the crown) and very, very thin on the rest of my scalp. I ve been seeing an Allergist for about two months. He wants me to see a Dermatalogist for my scalp problem . I ve read where thyroid medication can cause CIU. I ve been taking L-thyroxine for over 10 years and am wondering whether I should talk to my Primary Care Physician about changing this out.

Hi,

Since you are taking L-thyroxin for 10 years and hair related problem is for 10 months only, these two things can not be really co-related.
Hence consulting a Dermatologist should be the urgent priority.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
Multivitamin deficiency particularly Vitamin A and D. You should get all the vitamin blood tests and get replacement as per the reports.
Another possibility if of a fungal infection known to cause the same things and Dermatologist on confirmation can give the proper diagnosis and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
