Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 17 and his pediatrician thinks he is depressed. I took him to a psychologist who knows him and he also thinks he is depressed. They both think he needs medication. I cannot find a psychiatrist to treat him. They are all not taking patients, not taking our insurance, not seeing kids or only seeing kids but not a 17 yr old. I don t know what to do. Billy was seeing a dr about 7 years ago. She ordered Zoloft for him. I gave him 1 dose and he got hives. The pediatrician would order something but with the allergy and hives with zoloft he is uncomfortable doing so. Any help??
The hives post taking Zoloft is definitely indicative of an allergic reaction to the drug. If your pediatrician and psychologist are sure that he needs medications, there are different classes of drugs that can be tried under clinical supervision to ensure that he doesn't have an allergic reaction to these. Other SSRIs like fluoxetine and escitalopram can be tried. SNRIs can also be tried.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
