What Causes High Temperature With Low Platelet Levels In A Child?

Hi my 7 year old son has had a high temperature, very pale and not eating. He had a blood test done and his platelet count came back as 109, just 6 months ago his platelet count was 409. Is this current level something to be concerned about? The doctors will be doing more blood tests and says platelets can become low with a virus.

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

After going through your question, I can understand your concern.

Many of viral infections may present like this but there is need to consider complicated viral infection like Dengue fever, also malaria may present like this.

Your child need Further evaluation -
- Daily or alternate day platelet count.
- Liver function test.
- Renal function test.
- Urine examination.
- Chest X-ray.
- Peripheral Smear For Malerial Parasite.
- Dengue NS1 & IgG, IgM.
- Ultrasonography of abdomen and pelvis.

Depending upon clinical evaluation and above test results there may be need for hospitalization.

Watch for
- his activities, level of consciousness.
- Bleeding from any site like in urine, through nose, patechie over skin.
- Abdominal pain, jaundice.
- Breathing difficulties.
These may be alarming signs of complications.
You should follow advise of your pediatrician.

Hope this helps you, if so do vote as helpful.
