What Causes High Blood Pressure?

several days ago I checked my blood pressure and it read as 180/100. Then the doctor checked it again and result was 168/100. After several minutes it was 150/95. I went home and checked it during last 2 days. Every time it reads as more than 140/85.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these high blood pressure values that you have reported. This meets the diagnosis of hypertension. 95% of all persons with hypertension have no identified cause and it is referred to as essential hypertension. 5% could be caused by diseases like hyperthyroidism, blood vessel stenosis, pheochromocytoma, etc. It will be best to talk with your doctor for a comprehensive clinical exam and investigations to establish a possible cause. Also, remember to take drugs for this. Treatment consists in diet and life style modifications, regular exercise, no tobacco, reduced alcohol and salt intake alongside compliance to medications.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications should need be.
