What Causes High HCG Levels During 6 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

I am currently 6 weeks pregnant. I had blood work done last week and they told me I was about 5 weeks at that point. My hcg levels at that time were 45461. Does this mean I am having twins or what could cause it to be so high? I have endometriosis if that matters.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
hCG levels of 45461 is within normal range for 6 weeks of pregnancy and quite high at 5 weeks of pregnancy.
At 5 weeks LMP, it must be between 18 – 7,340 mIU/ml and at 6 weeks LMP, it must be between 1,080 – 56,500 mIU/ml.
Typically, hCG levels will double every 72 hours. The level will reach its peak in the first 8-11 weeks of pregnancy and then will decline and level off for the remainder of the pregnancy.
A high level of hCG should be rechecked within 48-72 hours to evaluate changes in the level.
Causes for High hCG levels could be:
1. Miscalculation of pregnancy dating
2. Molar pregnancy
3. Multiple pregnancy
Kindly check the hCG levels after 48 hours to know if there could be any change. Also check and calculate properly number of weeks of pregnancy from LMP (last menstrual period). You can get an ultrasound scan done to know if the levels are high due to multiple pregnancy.
Kindly consult Gynaecologist with reports for proper opinion and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
