Hello,
Hiccups are
recurrent spasms or sudden movements of the diaphragm that are involuntary. The diaphragm plays an important role in breathing and affects it drastically when affected.
The following are few causes of hiccups:
- Drinking carbonated beverages.
- Drinking too much alcohol.
- Eating too much.
- Being excited or under emotional stress.
- Experiencing sudden temperature changes.
- Swallowing air, such as when chewing gum or
smoking.
Some serious causes of hiccups are as follows:
1) Diabetes
2) Electrolyte imbalances like potassium and sodium alterations
3) Kidney disease
4) Stroke
5) Serious brain injury
6) Drugs like
corticosteroids, sedatives, benzodiazepines.
I recommend the following:
1) Please report about your hiccups to the doctor who prescribed your medication so that he will give you an alternative or reduce the dosage.
2) Drugs are used to treat hiccups only if they last for more than 48 hours.
3) Usually,
Thorazine is used to treat hiccups.
4)
Baclofen and Metoclopromide can also be used to treat hiccups.
If your episodes of hiccups don't stop, please do contact a physician for further evaluation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
