What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Hi! I am a 51 year old woman and have had really heavy periods for the last 8-10 years, especially on the 2nd and 3rd days. During that time I need to change my pad every 90 minutes. Anyway, this time I got my period after a gap of 2 months instead of 1, so I suppose I am finally moving towards menopause..? However, this time I have had an additional problem - when I go to pee or have a bowel movement my lower abdominal area hurts. It is severe excruciating pain and I had to bend over to keep from screaming. A wave of heat and nausea washed over me and all blood drained from my face and I barely kept myself sitting. Would you know why this kind of pain happened? It is really scary. I also experienced it when peeing. Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Please get an ultrasound abdomen done to rule out if you have any fibroid of the uterus or rectal or vaginal prolapse. The way you are describing your symptoms, I doubt you have some major pathology which has to be sorted out with physical examination and investigation.

Here, the physical examination is not possible. Kindly get the reports and come for follow-up with me or show to a gynecology doctor at your convenience.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
