What Causes Heavy And Painful Menstrual Bleeding?

Hi, I have a history of heavy periods and very painful cramps. I m 45 years old. I began my menstrual cycle yesterday after spotting for a week or so, but nothing continuous. Today, I have had very heavy bleeding and severe cramps. I have been resting since I got home from work and the cramps have gotten worse. I have pain medicine that isn t helping at all and the last 2 times I have been to the restroom the bleeding seems to have stopped all of a sudden, but the cramps are becoming more severe. It almost can be compared to labor pains but I know I am not pregnant. What could this be? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There might be multiple reasons for heavy and irregular and painful cycles.

This might be due to approaching menopause. Growths or tumors of the uterus called uterine fibroids or polyps are also common.

Certain types of birth control—for example, an intrauterine device (IUD).

Problems related to pregnancy, such as a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, can cause abnormal bleeding.

Hormone disease-related problems, Bleeding-related disorders, pelvic inflammatory disease, drugs like aspirin and infection are the other causes.

Take NSAIDs for pain and tranexamic acid for excess bleeding. See your Doctor who will find the cause after a sono scan and few blood investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
