What Causes Heart Palpitations And Arm Pain While Having Multiple Sclerosis?

Hello! I have Multiple Sclerosis and I have been having some issues of not feeling myself. I feel lightheaded at times, my head doesn t feel right, I have been having problems with my blood pressure being high with uncontrollable shaking like if I m nervous. Sometimes I feel nauseous, right arm pain, loss of balance, heart palpitations. Nobody seems to know what s wrong. Been hospitalized twice in the past month and a half. Had an EKG, stress test, brain MRI and an ultrasound of my chest and all came back negative. I am taking Gilenya for my MS and now my family doctor put me on Metoprolol for my blood pressure and I just found out those two medications taken together has a drug interaction. But my symptoms that I have been having all started before I was on the blood pressure medication. Can you please help? My email is YYYY@YYYY . Thanks, Tammie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Multiple sclerosis in itself does not cause heart palpitations. There are a few possibilities:
1) Gilenya aka Fingolimod has a side effect of lowering your heart rate it can cause arrhythmia and palpitation when taken with Metoprolol.
2) The lesion of multiple sclerosis when it spreads to the brainstem which controls the autonomic nervous system (which also supplies the heart) can cause palpitation.
3) Stress and anxiety can cause palpitation.

Speak to your physician and he could change the Metoprolol with some other medication to alleviate multiple sclerosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
