What Causes Heart Palpitations Along With Anxiety And Paranoia?

Hi, I am a 40 year old stay at home mother of two. I am currently training for a half marathon after taking a 4 month break. I have been running for about 14 years. On paper I am very healthy... low blood pressure, low cholesterol, good all around numbers. Lately though I ve been experiencing heart palpitations at night, anxiety, paranoia at times. Its worse on days when my fat intake for the day is not high enough. Am I experiencing some sort of fat deficiency? To remedy the symptoms during the night I have to drink some milk, have some crackers with peanut butter, something with fat or else I can not fall asleep. Please advise!

Hello,

I think that the stress of changed routine, returning to training after 4 months, changes in diet have caused this anxiety, which is fairly common and can cause palpitations as well. As you have mentioned that you have had your tests done and reports are normal so to me this appears to be some sort of psychological issue of increased stress and is probably triggered when you eat less during the day. The symptoms you have explained are not that of fat deficiency so i don’t think you have this.

I would advise you to:

1. Keep eating small amounts energy rich food items suitable to your training during the day
2. To meditate before bed
3. Deep breathing exercise to relieve anxiety
4. Try to drink warm tea, herbal tea before bed
5. Listen to calming music or read a book for relaxing

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiba Tehrim, General & Family Physician
