What Causes Headaches And Ear Pain In A Child Post Trauma?

Hi, my son who is 10 fell earlier on the floor and hit his head pretty hard. He has been complaining about a headache, and now almost 2 hrs later, ear pain. No other symptoms, such as nausea or vomiting. He is just laying on the couch complaining of headache and ear pain. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your query.

A fall which involves impact to the head should always caution us to watch for signs of brain and bone injury.

This pain could range from mild to severe and may be associated with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, excessive sleepiness, seizures and worsening headache, ear discharge (blood or clear watery fluid - cerebrospinal fluid)
If any of this occurs take him to the ER right away.

His current complaints warrant a visit to his doctor ASAP, at the least.

Monitor him closely, do not let him sleep alone and have a plan ready, should anything happen.
In head injuries, the person can go from fine to worse in a very short time. Seeing his doctor /ER is the best thing to do even if it is to rule out sever injury. Expect to be hospitalized for a day or two (of no complications occur)

Hope this helps. Feel free to get back to us if you have any questions
Wish you both good health
