What Causes Headache, Sore Throat And Excessive Saliva?

I have had a sore throat and headache for about 4 days now, but all of a sudden I have started producing an excessive amount of saliva. It has made sleeping quite difficult since I have to spit it out every 30 seconds. How can I stop this excessive saliva? Thanks in advance.

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain you have the symptoms of headache, sore throat and excess saliva..
Excess salivation is experienced due to 2 conditions:
1.DUE TO INCREASE IN PRODUCTION.
2. DUE TO REDUCED TENDENCY TO SWALLOW..

In your case it seems to be due to reduced tendency to swallow due to sore throat and some increased production can also be there due to throat irritation and stimulation of salivary glands to produce more saliva..

As the sore throat will improve the saliva flow will come back to normal..

As of now you can gargle with antiseptic mouthwash 3 to 4 times a day as it has a drying effect in mouth..
For throat infection you can take:
-Antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection..
-Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain. -----Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
-You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat..
-Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine..
-Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water..
-Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity..
-Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of headache, sore throat and excessive saliva, well symptoms you mention resemble strep throat and it could be due to viral pharyngitis.

Need not to worry. Usually it will go away by its own in few days. Avoid intake of outside food. Do warm saline gargles several times a day , drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor may order blood test and throat swab test to examine completely and can start treatment accordingly. You should take antiviral like acyclovir along with antisialogogues to prevent salivation and anti inflammatory along with drug like sucralfate to heal throat lining in severe cases . You should keep sipping warm water.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
