What Causes Green Bowel Movement After An Ileostomy?

My wife has an ileostomy, with little to no colon. Recently she started having green stools which seem to be presenting more frequently. They are nearly a neon green color. She neither ate nor drank anything green recently. She also has some stomach aches and cramping. None of the meds she has been taking for years have ever caused this. Should we be concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Through the ileum, unformed stool will be coming and may be of light coloured or green colour.

It is quite normal and nothing much to worry. If the colour persists better to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
