Hi! Dannielle,
Why did you start a high protein diet? Was it for weight loss? If yes, then first of all let me tell you that such fad diets which focus on only one food group disturb body's natural
metabolism. Such fad diets result in weight loss which is temporary because when you revert to your usual eating habits, weight rebound is very likely.
If you are a non-vegetarian and have been taking lots of non veg like meat, fish, chicken without enough complex carbohydrates, then its because of too much protein that you are having gas formation. Too much protein in the diet causes intestinal bacteria to act upon it releasing obnoxious smelling gases. You must have a well-balanced diet as high protein diets can cause harm when continued for a long time.
Include some fibre rich foods like Oats, oat bran, brown rice and whole fruits like apples, guava, watermelons as well as citrus fruits as they will not only provide fibre but also
vitamins and minerals to your body. Have raw vegetables as salads and drink plenty of water to make sure you do not have
constipation.
When you take a high protein diet, it displaces complex carbohydrates from diet which are essential for intestinal health and this results in constipation giving rise to
flatulence or intestinal gas.
Stay active to burn the calories but make sure your diet is well-balanced and not lacking in other essential nutrients which you will obtain from carbohydrates and fats too. So, include some amount of fats (3-4 tsp/15-20 gm a day) in the form of refined vegetable oil like olive oil, canola oil etc. Complex carbohydrates in the form of whole grain cereals, fruits and vegetables are also essential for good health. You can include low fat, protein foods in moderation like low fat milk/yoghurt, fish, chicken, boiled eggwhites, lean cuts of meat but avoid fatty meats, organ meats which can cause increase in cholesterol!
I hope I have answered your query satisfactorily.
