What Causes Frequent Urination, cramps And Breast Sensitivity Despite Having Mirena?

Hi, I had the mirena inserted on december 12 2014. I had a problem wit it at first. My body was naturally pushing the IUD out. My doctor removed it and replaced it with a new one. I have had to have the strings cut multiple times due to my partner being able to feel them when we have sex. My doctor has cut the strings as low as they can go and my partner can still feel it. I visited my doctor to make sure it was still in place and she assured me it was. I am now starting to have frequent urination, Increasing cramps, sensitivity in the breasts, nausea and vomiting. I know that pregnancy if highly unlikely but I am still worried that there is a possibility that I am pregnant. Are these symptoms normal or something I should be worried about?

Hi,

Frequent urination, cramps, breast sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting can be symptoms of pregnancy, but they can also be side effects of hormonal birth control such as the Mirena IUD. While the Mirena IUD is a highly effective form of birth control, it is still possible to become pregnant while using it. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it is important to take a pregnancy test and discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider.

It is also possible that your symptoms may be related to other factors, such as an infection or other medical conditions. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider, who can perform a thorough evaluation and recommend appropriate testing or treatment options.

Regarding the issue of the IUD strings, your partner may be feeling the actual device rather than the strings themselves. It may be helpful to discuss this with your healthcare provider, who can perform a follow-up examination to ensure that the device is properly positioned and functioning as intended.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
