What Causes Frequent Urination During The Night And Painful Sex After Lobectomy?

Three years ago i had several operations where i had my left lung removed and then a couple of months later i had to have my entire stomach removed. During this operation i had a catheter inserted threw my penis and into my bladder. A few days later a student nurse was instructed to remove the catheter and during this procedure i found it to be very uncomfortable while she was trying to remove the catheter. She was having difficulty in removing the catheter and then proceeded to break out into a funny giggle. it was then that she announced that she had forgotten to deflate the balloon. Ever since this has happened , i have had several medical issue arise from this i believe. One of these issues being frequent urination during the night while sleeping. I find myself getting up 5 to 6 times a night either urinating or having the urge to urinate. The second and probably the most disturbing of the issues being during sexual intercourse being in unbelievable severe pain. Then just before ejaculating the pain becomes so severe along with a feeling of a stinging sensation that i lose erection almost instantly and have to stop. I guess my question is that was it possible that there was damage done to the urethra perhaps some type of scar tissue is involved now and if so what should my next step be in trying to find out and if there is treatment for what ever has happened to me. Thanks from Mike

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

* As per my surgical experience, the frequent painful urination during night and painful sex with history of difficulty in retrieval of urinary catheter by nursing staff with intact inflated bulb means surely urethral injury most likely prostatic or bulbar urethra.

* The symptoms of urinary discomfort as well as sex related issues are both concerned with the urethral injury which is purely iatrogenic and negligence of the nursing staff.

* Now the next step of action is ascending urethrography and diagnostic cystoscopy to find out the extent of damage and figure out the solution protocols.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
