What Causes Frequent Urination And Blood In Urine?

My symptoms include: A.)This symptom has been going on for a while now: 1) discomfort while urinating (for more than a year), and today this discomfort has reached a new plateau. B.)Newer symptoms: 1) more frequent urinating than my norm; As of 12 hours ago, the latest symptoms are: 1) blood or (blood clots?) in the urine; and 2) decreasing amount of urine being expelled from the body; and 3) more pronounced urgency; and 4) increasing amount of discomfort while urinating. (when I first noticed this latest symptom, it seemed like it was either clumped blood or maybe blood clots that were expelled while urinating because they did not disperse like liquid blood does when it hits water. Then it changed to liquified blood and with each successive urination, the amount of blood dispelled has dropped considerably.) I have felt extreme urgency to urinate at least 10 times since 6am this morning--- highly unusual for me. Medical conditions possibly related to this issue: I have had an ingroinal hernia since 2000, which resurfaced after it was originally repaired in 1984--- before they used mesh. I mention this because I usually have no difficulty pushing my intestine back through the intestinal wall by pressing on the hernia; however, today, it seems that it is causing me discomfort and it is much harder to push down on my hernia to return the intestine to it s rightful place behind the intestinal wall. There are 2 outside circumstances that might need to be considered: 1) I just completed 3 years of incarceration--- 27 months were in a state facility where I was raped by a male inmate 14 months ago; (no, I have not been checked for any sex-related illnesses since a year before the rape); 2) I have been keeping long hours and I rented a room in a house with 6 other roommates, so, as bathroom time had been scarce, I had been using plastic bottles as urinals for more than a month (without washing them out)-- so I wonder if I have contracted an infection? I am a very hygienic individual and the main reason for using the psuedo-urinals is that I had begun the frequent and urgent urination and I couldn t wait for a bathroom to open up, but, then, I became accustomed to using them and basically became lazy. 3.) I found out approximately a year ago that when I was a US Marine stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, I was exposed to, showered, bathed, cooked with and consumed polluted water for a year. They are so concerned about the possible health problems that can be attributed to this that they even have made settlements available to be awarded to those exposed with medical problems. 4.) I sometimes suffer from gastrointestinal issues(GURD), from no explanation, and I used to take Zantac for it; 5.) I am bi-polar so I also take Depakote 500mg, 3 at bedtime and I suffer from allergies so I take 50 of Benadryl, twice a day. My email address is: YYYY@YYYY The

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In most cases this is sign of uroinfection or kidneys stones. This is mainly self limiting and doesn't require any specific treatment and you should just be patient and have fluids to promote urination. Less likely it may indicate possible bleeding in urethra, bladder or kidneys from popped vessel or some other cause. IF this continues you should do urine analysis, urinoculture and kidneys ultrasound to rule these main causes out. You should drink raspberry tea and plenty of water till you do tests. Also, avoid sexual intercourse and have keep good hygiene. You should reduce salt in your diet as well since this could lead to increased risk of urinary stone formation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
