Hi,

Children with epilepsy are at risk for having attention problems, learning disabilities & other cognitive weaknesses such as difficulty with memories or problem solving skills. Often seizures and cognitive difficulties can be caused by the same underlying problem in brain. In some cases, the seizure themselves, can impact brain development, particularly in children who have frequent seizures or start of seizures at an early age, usually around 2 years of age.

Seizure medicines usually help in controlling the seizures and are usually tolerated well by the children. But some times these can also impact attention or thinking process. In the case of your child, along with the treatment of seizures, you are also required to get your child evaluated for any learning disability or behavior issues by a neuro-psychologist.

A neuropsychological evaluation is designed to help parents, doctor and schools better understand your child's needs, strengths and weaknesses. The goal of this evaluation is to help form a plan to address the learning and behavioral needs of the child. This evaluation may generally have information about:
- Whether the child has a diagnosis of learning, attention, cognitive or other mental health disorder.
- Suggestions for school about need for extra supports or therapies etc.
- Suggestion for you as parents, what you can do at home to help address your child's needs.
- Other recommendations such as consideration of medication, counselling, additional therapies or community services etc.

Thus, a coordinated approach between all the above participants may help in healthy development of your child physically, mentally and emotionally and make his life more smooth and comfortable.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
