What Causes Foul Smelling Orange Discharge While On Doxycycline?
I have been taking doxycycline to prevent malaria as I am in Africa for 2 months. I ve been taking the pills a little over a week and a half. I have a foul smelling and orange discharge but I cannot stop taking the antibiotics. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about this or do I have to deal with a 3 month long infection? (Must take pills 4 weeks after return as well)
Suggestive of vaginal candidiasis (vaginal infection caused by yeast). You can use antifungal medicine lie Fluconazole or Nystatin which can be applied inside the vagina or a single dose of Fluconazole taken by mouth will also be sufficient to eradicate this infection. By wearing cotton underwear and maintaining good hygiene help reduce the chances of getting a yeast infection. Continue taking Doxycycline every day through out your stay in Africa and for another 4 weeks after you leave Africa.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
