What Causes Foaming At The Mouth Of A Child?

My 5 year old is foaming at the mouth while sleep. She complained of a stomach ache tonight and she s had a cough for some time now along with thick green and yellowish mucus coming from her nose. Last month she had walking pneumonia and I took her to the emergency room where the doctor prescribed her an antibiotic. She was a preemie and had sleep apnea when she was an infant. She also gets a bad cough every winter that does NOT go away for a couple months. What is this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From the symptoms you are describing, it seems that she is still having respiratory issues. An immediate consultation with pulmonologist is highly recommended to rule out an ongoing pneumonia and treat it adequately. Next, foaming at the mouth while sleeping associated with toothache could be due to increased phlegm and still associated with possible ongoing pneumonia. So, get her checked by pulmonologist as soon as possible and get her treated adequately. She might need prescription antibiotics, and coughing medicines. X-ray of chest and respiratory function tests should run to check her lungs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
