What Causes Fluttering Sensation In The Head And Body While Having Cervical Spondylitis?

Hi there, Am a 33 year old female, for the last year I have been experiencing this flutter like felling all over my body, which seem to be more than usual now, initially it would happen about 2ce a day, now it s like every few minutes pretty much anywhere, now I get them even in my head. This is more prominent when am lying down or resting. I now also have rapid heartbeats, and a limitless shaky/vibrating sensation in my head. Full blood count is fine, heart rate and a scan of the heart is fine. I was told last year I had cervical spondylitis after and X-ray and MRI was done to my neck, and also told I have elevated thyroid anitobidies, even though the thyroid hormones itself are fine. Any advice please?

Hi,

From the presenting symptoms, it seems to be pathology related to nerves. Sometimes, cervical spondylitis results in a narrowing of the space needed by the spinal cord and the nerve roots that pass through the spine to the rest of your body. If the spinal cord or nerve roots become pinched, you might experience Tingling or numbness similar to the one that you experience in the form of flutter like sensation.
The may stay of management remains exercises. Make sure that you do following exercises daily:
Neck stretch
•     Keep your body straight.
•     Push your chin forward in a way that stretches the throat.
•     Softly tense the neck muscles.
•     Hold this for 5 seconds.
•     Return your head to its center position.
•     Push your head back with the chin held high, and hold for 5 seconds.
•     Carry out 5 repetitions.
Neck tilt
•     Tilt your head forward so that the chin touches the chest.
•     Softly tense the neck muscles.
•     Hold this for 5 seconds.
•     Return the head to a neutral position.
•     Carry out 5 repetitions.
Neck tilt (side-to-side)
•     Lean your head down towards either shoulder, leading with the ear.
•     Softly tense the neck muscles.
•     Hold this for 5 seconds.
•     Return your head to the center and repeat on the other shoulder.
•     Carry out 5 repetitions.
Neck turn
•     Turn your head to one side as far as it remains comfortable, being sure to keep your chin at a level height.
•     Tense your neck muscles for 5 seconds.
•     Return the head to a central position.
•     Repeat on the opposite side.
•     Repeat this exercise 5 times on each side.

If you feel any discomfort while doing these, I suggest you to stop right away or do in an intensity that is tolerable for you.
Do consult with your local HCP to discuss the above-mentioned exercises.
Apart from this, you may take muscle relaxers or steroid shots but that are not necessary for now.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maninder, General & Family Physician
