What Causes Flu Like Symptoms With Nasal Congestion Post Swimming?

I m a 60 yr old male with a problem; whenever I go swimming in the pool, I develop flu-like symptoms; running nose, sneezing, nose congestion that lasts for just a day.Could it be the chemicals in the water and what do u suggest? I really enjoy swimming and wouldn t want to give it up.

Hello,

Actually there is a wide range of possibilities. There can be not only chemicals but germs in the pool and low-grade infection, of course, can give infectious symptoms.

And, water can get into the ears to produce ear infection. Getting an exam with the symptoms being present would likely determine the cause. Ironically, the mildness of the problem makes this quite tricky.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
