What Causes Flatulence While Coughing?

Hi, I am a 56 year old woman. Most times when I cough a lot, I fart at the same time. This occurs mostly at home, and I try to control it at work but it s difficult at times. What is the cause of this and how can I stop it? Thank you for whatever advice you may give. I am extremely sorry Dr, I am from a developing country in the western Pacific and I don t have access to Visa or MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, etc., so I cannot pay the fee.

When you cough, you increase your intra-abdominal pressure (which is the same as when you try to bear down to pass stool or gas). This will of course, at times result in the release of gas because of this. As you get older, your sphincter control tends to weaken, which makes this more likely to happen. If this causes embarrassment, you can try to suppress your cough at work with cough medicines, or try to stay away from foods that can cause excess gas.
