What Causes Finger Nails To Turn Dark, swollen And Peel Of Easily?
About 2 years ago my fingernail started turning blue around the lunula , and over the months it became darker and darker until it was brown and my finger became swollen (no pain) and one day while I was in class it became soggy ( I didn't wash my hands or had any thing that would make it soggy on my hands) and I started to pick at it and it came off.. There was this white stuff on it and it had a horrible stench. I went to my doctor and she said it was a fungus and prescribed me a cream to put on it but it doesn't help, My fingernail is still very much brown, still peels off and my finger is still swollen. What can this possibly be ?
It definitely seems to be a fungal infection of the nail and surrounding soft tissue(chronic paronychia). Fungal infections of the nails need a long time to resolve because of the relatively slow rate of growth and it is important to take an oral anti-fungal like fluconazole once weekly for at least 9-12 months for a complete cure.
Topical anti-fungals either don't help or help only partially.
It is important to avoid doing wet work OR reduce it to as minimum as possible because moist environment favors the growth of fungus.
take care regards
