What Causes Fever And Vomiting In A Child?

Last night my daughter (10) woke early with a fever and threw up.. She rested and drank fluids today and felt a bit better after sitting outside for a bit. Tonight she feels nauseous again and has a fever at 101.4. My wife noticed she has an infected ingrown toenail. Could this be the cause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Fever and vomiting in children are generally caused by a viral infection that heals itself. It does not need any treatment except paracetamol for fever and more fluid to avoid dehydration.

Yes the ingrowing toenail, if infected can cause fever in children though it, not a common reason and vomiting are unlikely with it.

If its sudden onset, if don't think this would be the cause. But if it is red and swollen, it may be the cause and should be discussed with his doctor for proper care of the nail.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
