What Causes Fever And Endocarditis Symptoms When Born With Congenital Heart Defects?

My son started out with a slightly higher temperature for about a week just under 100 F. Then it spiked just under 103 for about 3 weeks and now it is just under a hundred again. I took him to ED when it got above 102 and they ran blood work, chest x-ray, etc.. His WBC was normal, his CRP elevated, and they could find nothing else wrong. He is 5 years old now and was born with congenital heart defects and had open heart surgery at 6 mo of age. He now has no pulmonary valve as they had to literally punch it out. Tetralogy of Fallot was the original diagnosis. I am a nurse, and will be an NP in about 6 months, however, I am scared my son might have endocarditis. I realize the percentage of children who get endocarditis is very low, though of those, 75% are those who have congenital heart defects. The doctors, including his pediatrician seem to think it isn t a big deal, and tell me if it climbs over 101 again, they will order an echo on him and go from there. I am not one to wait and see what happens. I know with my experience, if the infection is bacterial, he will get a LOT sicker, and I would think this would have already happened by now, but his temperature is running just over 1.5 degrees over his basal for the last few days. Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated!
