What Causes Fever Along With Severe Cough And Wheezing?

My 78 year old husband is running a 101.1 fever. He has a chest cold starting 3 days ago with severe coughing and wheezing. He has COPD. Does he need to be seen immediately or allowed to sleep overnight? I gave him some Tylnol and a dose of NyQuilD.

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
All his symptoms are suggestive of acute exacerbation of COPD. COPD patients are at increased risk of lung infection due to poor lung defense.
His symptoms like high grade fever, wheezing, cough, cold etc are more suggestive of lung infection.
So better to take him to the hospital and get done chest x ray to rule out lung infection.
He will need antibiotics, mucolytic and expectorant drugs along with inhaled bronchodilator.
So consult doctor and discuss all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your father. Thanks.
