What Causes Fecal Impaction While On Metformin, Calcium Magnesius And Prostavan?

Hello, my husband broke his foot in May, had surgery to repair his navicular bone with a metal plate and screws.........he s a diabetic and has spent the summer in various casts. When this all began his A1C level was 8, and we were advised to cut way back on the carbs and increase vegetables and protein. Now, he does get some carbs, but by cutting back we ve made major adjustments. His blood sugar levels have not been higher than 160 any time he s tested them(3x s per day) and he s cut his insulin levels from 30 units to 15 units daily. It appears to have worked in expediting his bone healing.....he just last week came out of a cast and into a diabetic boot devise......still with very little pressure on the foot. Our problem is this: every day he takes calcium magnesius, zinc capsules, metformin, tumeric, milk thistle, probiotic, prostavan, a multiple vitamin for men over 50, and biotin for skin and hair. In this last week, he s has become impacted with feces.......he uses NO drugs whatsoever for the pain, so opiod use is ruled out. He is moving more than ever this past week, and drinks lots of water......so we re not sure how to begin.

Hi,

You can ask your gastroenterologist to prescribe Polyethene Glycol. Polyethene glycol-electrolyte solution is used to empty the colon. PEG-ES is in a class of medications called osmotic laxatives. It works by causing watery diarrhea so that -the stool can be emptied from the colon. The medication also contains electrolytes to prevent dehydration and other serious side effects that may be caused by fluid loss as the colon is emptied. Polyethene glycol-electrolyte solution (PEG-ES) comes as a powder to mix with water and take by mouth.

You have to drink one 8 ounces of PEG-ES every 10 or 15 minutes and to continue drinking until your liquid bowel movements are clear. It will clear your bowel.

In case if it also does not help go for Digital evacuation. It involves the use of fingers to aid in the removal of stool from the rectum. The stool is emptied by gently inserting a finger into the rectum and removing it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
