What Causes Factor 5 Deficiency?

my daughter has Factor 5, although has no history of PE or DVT. She is 18 and in generally good health, low weight and physically fit. Her oral surgeon has little knowledge of Factor 5 and she is currently scheduled t have 4 wisdom teeth extracted. should we speak with a hematologist prior to the surgery or are there any risk associated with this surgery and someone who has Factor 5?

Hi,

Factor V deficiency is a rare bleeding disorder that results in poor clotting after an injury or surgery. It is a protein produced in liver that helps convert prothombin into thrombin which is important for blood clotting process. Among the 13 clotting factors for normal blood coagulation, factor V is one of them. Factor V deficiency may be inherited or acquired. It is a recessive gene which means that the gene should be inherited from both of parents for showing clinical features. Some underlying conditions that may affect factor V include: disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), cirrhosis of liver, autoimmune disorders like SLE, secondary fibrinolysis due to medications or health issues, spontaneous autoimmune reactions after child birth or surgery, carcinoma etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
